Being strongly involved in the European Galileo* Programme, Astrium has acquired outstanding expertise in Satellite Navigation..
Galileo*, Europe's answer to GPS, will play a crucial role as future key infrastructure system, enabling applications
in all areas of mobility - from rail & road navigation to maritime and airborne applications.
More than 200 000 jobs are estimated to be generated by the Galileo Programme, led by the European Commission and ESA, the European Space Agency.
Astrium's responsibilities in Galileo include the design and development of Space & Ground Infrastructure.
The test satellite GIOVE-B, the precursor test satellite generating the real Galileo Signal In Space for the first time, was led by Astrium as the prime contractor.

GNSS-independent Positioning & Local Augmentation Systems
But Astrium's Navigations go beyond the perimeter of global available systems: For specific positioning applications requiring a performance beyond the limits of GNSS, Astrium offers a set of
local augmentation systems designed to increase the availability, accuracy and reliability of Global Satellite Navigation Systems in a local environment. With so called "Pseudolites", we are providing additional Satellite-identical ranging signals in a local area. With the patented "Indoor Localization Technology", we are providing a solution dedicately designed for indoor navigation in complex buildings.. With the "DeckFinder" System, we provide a high accuracy relative positioning system with an extremely good accuracy of 25cm.
