Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the RF bandwidth user programmable ?

A: Partly.
The NSG will be delivered with a standard filter bandwidth setup according to GPS, Galileo* etc. SIS ICD. These settings are specific for each device and measured in a calibration process and stored in a configuration file. Nevertheless the bandwidth can be changed by loading new filter settings, however the performance is then not guaranteed. The process of calculating new configuration file is subject to the manufacturer.

Q: Can I transmit e.g. an E5a or E5b only ?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I use non standard signal setups (GPS or Galileo*)?

A: Yes.
The GUI allows an “expert mode” which gives full access to the signal generation. However this mode is only recommended for advanced users since dependencies between several parameters are not checked for consistency.

Q: Does the NSG 5100 support pulsing?

A: Yes.
Currently implemented are the RTCM and RTCA scheme. Users interested in programming a proprietary pattern are free to do so.

Q: Which Galileo* receivers have been tested for compatibility?

A: Novatel's GPSplus Galileo* receiver, BayNavTech Galileo* receiver

Q: Does the NSG5100 support GLONASS?

A: In theory YES.
The NSG supports the modulation scheme and frequencies. Nevertheless there are no standard settings for GLONASS delivered with the device.

Q: Does the NSG 5100 support PRS signals?

A: No,
the NSG 5100 does not support PRS or has a key management implemented. Please contact us if you are an authorized user for PRS and interested in PRS signal generation.

Q: Is there a navigation message on the signal?

A: Yes,
there is a GPS nav message according to SIS ICD and a Galileo* NavMsg according to Galileo* OS SIS ICD D.0 (23/05/06), including horizontal and vertical CRC's. The NavMsg file is editable by the user.

Q: Are there any fees or royalties concerning the Galileo* signal?

A: Currently in the terms and conditions of the Galileo* SIS ICD fees are mentioned but no further statements or information on this.
Astrium will calculate its price for the device following applicable royalty terms and will keep the user informed on this. If there will be user charges for the use or generation of the signal the user is responsible to make sure that he uses the NSG in line with existing regulations.

Q: Does the NSG support Galileo* integrity?

A: Integrity is a NavMsg issue.
Since the NavNsg is transparent and fully user definable the user can implement Galileo* integrity.

Q: Is it possible to combine several NSGs, e.g. to have a fully synchronized set of Galileo* signals as broadcast by a satellite?

A: Yes.
The NSG supports synchronisation via a clock and trigger in- and output. Several NSGs can be synchronized to an external clock.

Q: Which software platform is supported for the Host control software?

A: Currently only Windows 2000/XP is supported.

Q: Is the IP address of the NSG configurable?

A: Yes.
Only the port number is set fix to 1024

Q: Is it possible to configure the SG over internet?

A: Yes,
you must only make sure that you forward your port through your local network and make your IP public with a dynamic DNS service.

Q: Can I make all settings on the front panel keypad as in the host software?

A: The keypad allows a reduced subset of functions to be addressed (e.g. IP config, start of predefined scripts, power settings etc.).
Not all host software functions are available via display and keypad.

Q: Is the NSG5100 only available as desktop unit?

A: The NSG will be delivered as desktop unit by default.
There is an optional 19" rack mount kit available.

Q: Does the power supply support 110V input voltage?

A: Yes,
the NSG uses a power supply with wide input range which also supports 110V.

Q: Does the NSG support GPS P(Y)-Code signals?

A: No.
No key management implemented.

Q: Is it possible to load a user- predefined configuration file ?

A: Yes,
the GUI supports load and storage of user defined config files.

Q: Can I get information on the status of the NSG5100 while in broadcast mode?

A: Yes,
the NSG can send a set of housekeeping or monitoring parameters which are displayed in the GUI or can be evaluated by the user in its own software.

Q: Which languages are supported by the GUI and NSG front panel?

A: All messages, menus etc. and the GUI are in English.

Q: Can I switch off the BOC sub-carrier modulation?

A:Yes.
In the “expert mode” of the GUI it is possible to disable the BOC sub-carrier modulation. It is also possible to vary the BOC sub-carrier frequency in steps of 511.5 kHz.

Q: In which range is the Output Power Level of the NSG user-configurable?

A: The output power level is software-configurable in a range from -45dBm to 0dBm for NSG 5100H
and -75dBm to -30dBm for NSG 5100L.
External attenuators can be used to shift the configurable output power range to a lower level.

Q: Does the NSG fit for outdoor applications?

A: The NSG can be operated in a temperature range of 0°C to +55°C with a non condensing humidity of max. 90%.
However, in the standard version the housing of the NSG is not suitable for outdoor usage. But the user is free to buildi ts own enclosure or rack which holds the NSG 5100 in order to fulfil the specified environmental operating conditions.

Q: Is there a customer service?

A: Yes,
there is a customer care hotline and an additional support service.

Q: Does the NSG have an active or passive cooler?

A: The NSG has an active cooling fan.

Q: Will you dispose the signal generator at end of life time?

A: We will collect and dispose the unit according to the applicable WEEE regulations in the European Community. For other Countries or further information please contact us.
