Global Navigation Satellite Systems:
The involvement in the Galileo Programme in different projects - as GALA, GILT, Comparative System Study and Galilei - has contributed significantly to the establishment of a profound understanding of the European GNSS.
Astrium's responsibilities included amongst others the entire system design, signal design and performance engineering activities. Through this work, we have obtained a strong expertise in the Galileo infrastructure, the system's performance and the whole Galileo mission.
A deep understanding of all worldwide GNSS and augmentation systems is a pre-requisite for the development of a new navigation system like Galileo. Due to its participation in many various analysis and measurement campaigns, Astrium has developed competences in all present GNSS systems such as GPS and GLONASS, and augmentation systems like WAAS and EGNOS.
The future evolution and performance of these systems are permanently under observation, as this knowledge is the basis for the daily work on Galileo.
Communication Systems:
Additionally to GNSS, Astrium has been involved in the system design and analysis activities of communication systems like LEO1, kitcomm, Orbcomm as well as of Search and Rescue (SAR) systems.
Location-based services:
Location-based services will play a very important role in the future of satellite navigation applications, combining positioning, navigation and mobile communication with services that provide additional relevant information for the user: Depending on the known user position, the handheld is provided with additional information to the surrounding area, like restaurants, hospitals etc.
Astrium has developed and analysed a concept and the system design for a location based service used applied during the Soccer World Championship in Germany, 2006. Different means have been combined, as can be seen in the following figure:
